Atmospheric Games is a new venture by Charles Dickey, author of The Sentiments and Other Stories; owner of Leftunder Books and the fairly defunct Fiercely Interdependent; and former content developer and editor at Nevermet Press.
Firstly, this blog will serve as a platform for me to polish my map-making skills. One of the many things that attracted me to D&D and, subsequently, other role-playing games, was the subterranean and dungeon maps. The decaying keep of the Red Box started it all, and Gygax’s dungeon map included in the 1E Dungeon Master’s Guide was another amazing creation, to my mind. By the current standards of the gaming industry, both those maps qualify as dross, but their casual, low-fi charm still works magic on me. The success of OSRIC and related “old-school” projects has shown that there is a sizable community of gamers who still appreciate and even crave the older styles of play, including the casual artistic style associated with those early games. With my maps, I would like to evoke the wonder and simplicity of old-school maps while absorbing and using the best qualities of the more technically-advanced maps of modern gaming.
Beyond maps, this site will also feature:
- system-neutral RP content, such as cultures and races, location descriptions, and monsters
- thoughts on game mastering and game design
